About the Work

Wordplay in Clay is a collection of hand-built ceramic sculptures that express my sense of humor. My interpretations of common expressions, idioms, puns and contradictions aim to make you smile. I have made art in a variety of media throughout my personal and professional life, including calligraphy, graphic design, fiber arts and collage. I taught elementary and middle school art for over 20 years in Cherry Creek Schools, and since retiring, I have found a unifying theme (and medium) to my work in this collection.

The original inspiration came from an elective course I taught on humor in art, which tapped into the wit and cleverness of my 8th graders. Throughout my teaching career, clay was always my favorite medium to use with kids. I have made over 150 unique sculptures in this series, many featuring animals, all with a clever twist.
